HORSEMANSHIP
Semester 1
In this course students learn the key knowledge to progress into VCE Equine Studies. The class develops an advanced understanding of horse behaviour and handling skills. Developing the knowledge to examine, identify and treat common injuries and illnesses. Students learn to manage and prepare horses for competition and understand the rules and regulations involved in their chosen sports. At the end of this course students develop riding skills, which may include and are not limited to: sitting trot, two and three point seat, trot poles, correct canter leads, warm up and cool down procedures, square halts, and simple changes. This class provides electives for semester 2 to explore different equestrian skills and broaden students’ opportunities in the Equine Industry.
SKILL DEVELOPMENT
Semester 2
Students develop their knowledge on preparing a horse for a competition. Students will research the requirements and then work to prepare a College horse and themselves for a dressage competition. Group riding lessons are varied depending on ability levels. Students complete up to 3 flat work lessons per fortnight, with a focus on improving position and balance, understanding transitions, and more complex use of the aids. A reasonable level of fitness and prior knowledge is required to undertake this subject at Year 9 level.
